type='text'>Minny Pops

@ 2008-07-12 23:07:00
Cyberinsekt writes:

"I was a strange teenager. Actually, strike that. I was a deliberately strange teenager, pretentious and affected, and trying way too hard. I suspect that a large proportion of my more stupid antics were done entirely for my own benefit, to persuade myself of how different I was.

One of the more embarrassing of those incidents was the time I put this track on the record player, turned the lights off, and danced about the room while eating a bag of chips. Why? I have absolutely no idea. I suspect the fact that it probably had never been done before was a large part of the appeal."

Minny Pops, "Dolphin's Spurt."

"Dolphin's Spurt," the 3rd single off Dutch post-punk outfit Minny Pops' (not to be confused with these disturbingly sexualized pageant tots) debut album, Drastic Measures, Drastic Movement, featured a B-side; "Goddess."

"Goddess" was a fitting cure for Cyberinsekt's adolescent distaste for pedestrian/routine. Under the eye of drum-obsessed producer Martin Hannett, Minny Pops front man Wally van Middendorp was at his own liberty to create dark layers and totally express himself.

As detailed in the April '81 issue of Shades:

"It's strange working with Hannett. He just lets you record whatever you want. He told us, 'Just go ahead and record whatever you think is suitable and I'll see what I can do with it.' Sometimes [Hannett] laid down on the floor of the mixing room for half an hour at least, just thinking."

If you tend to recognize van Middendorp's Curtis-esque bug dance from the "Dolphin's Spurt" film, the band's Factory records label may also ring familiar. Minny Pops drew enough notice from releasing singles on Wally's own Plurex label to book opening dates for Factory alum Joy Division when Curtis & co. toured Amsterdam in January 1980. Minny Pops kept in touch with the Manchester label and four months later the Factory Club (ie. Russell Club) invited them to perform.

NME writer Andy Gill mentions the deliberate (& notable) theatrics that capped Minny Pops live "bug"-outs:

"They adopted the odd habit of standing silently, arms folded, for as long as a minute after each song. This caused considerable confusion amongst the audience, who seemed unsure whether to clap, shout, or ask for an encore."

Wally responds:

"We figured that normal rock and roll is set up as a fast-paced set - one song ends, the next starts within four seconds. I thought that if you break up the pacing between numbers, it might give people a chance to look over what you've done."

Between 1979 and 1985 Minny Pops released three albums on Factory Records before splitting up.

---------------

Faxqs:
Minny Pops are: Wally van Middendorp (vocals and drum machine), Frans Hagenaars (bass), Peter Mertens (guitarist) and two dancers, including Wally's brother Rob.

Their name comes from a Korg rhythm box called Mini Pops.

In November 1980, Minny Pops were the first Dutch band to record a Peel Session for BBC radio.

---------------
Indulge:

+ mp3 Goddess
+ mp3 Goddess [demo version]

If you want Minny Pops music / send veggie chips & dimming switches to aud520@gmail.com

or purchase their remastered CDs on LTD:
http://www.ltmpub.freeserve.co.uk/mpopscat.html

E(r)go Drafty

"We dig dig dig dig dig dig dig in our mine the whole day through
To dig dig dig dig dig dig dig is what we really like to do
...
Heigh ho, Heigh ho,
It's off to work we go
Heigh ho, Heigh ho, Heigh ho, Heigh ho
Heigh ho...Heigh ho..."

And so onward unto the mines, seven whistle-busy dwarfs chose to drench their daily march in a chorus of repetitious simplicity to mask what grueling task their tools might soon take on.

Possibly somewhere distant in those same deep dark depths, featuring craggy treehands and spooky hoot-owls (possibly the same foresty territory that Snow White herself was fearfully deployed into) Sleater-Kinney marched "dig dig dig" and "heigh ho" onward ho to their own single Beat.

Alright, so maybe an over-and-over analogy doesn't do justice to the innovative licks and battlecry creativity that Sleater-Kinney's previous efforts deserve. But upon impact of their 2005 accomplishment, The Woods, Sleater-Kinney cause the similar sound of their first six steps forward to be heard as mere practice sessions, and prove that album number seven was not meant to mimic any dwarf.

It's probably okay to thank the production of David Fridmann for the sound's new (yet still distinctly S-K) and barbarous bellow. I mean the musicians have got this new move to Sub Pop, and news hardly matters when dude takes their "heigh ho" work ethic and places the emphasis back on the hearty decree that the millenial rock pioneers have been eyeing for the past decade: "Laaaaand ho!" ye noisy dense, and jam session be wrapped.

So, vocals now sandwiched between murky vibe and veteran production, a forest is a fitting forum for the pinnacle of S-K's career. And if there's one thing that matters about The Woods, it's that the entirety of its awesomely brutal roar bulldozes any hapless blab that may attempt to dish unnecessary insult to Sleater-Kinney by pasting a 'female-affair' bit near the introductory inclination of their compositional ingenuity. Janet Weiss--as mimicked in their video for "Entertain"--drives the band toward the new onward-ho with her immaculate grasp of percussive instinct; Carrie Brownstein holds back no less by making a cunning heart-to-hand connection via guitar; and Corin Tucker finally unleashes the culmination of her carnal proclivity by progressing from fidgety-angsty caterwauler to royally-furied arena rock legend.

And new sonic limits reached, the announcement is unapologetic. Cue-ing the mood of their kinetic potential, "Eeeiiiueeee" is track one's squeaky jaw of a metal beastly widening in split-second slo-mo, adapting to devour what hapless prey may displace its any-prudence in pursuit of --SLAMchomp-- The Woods. Three minutes and twenty-five seconds later, you tumble from, not a breath left, as the resound of "The Fox" fades forward into more "Wilderness." The rest of the record follows just as tightly, and just as brash. On "Modern Girl," a crescendo of destructive fuzz perfectly emulates the caustic lyricsm of the song; a heroine drowning in the thicket of her lament. And although "Entertain" may give some listeners Arcade Fire fuzzies, the echo of "Neighboorhood 2 (Laika)" that perks the ears is an intro-only affair. "Entertain" is all thick attitude and heavy literal assault, dividing the feeble from the ferocious: "The lines are drawn/whose side are you on?"

"What's Mine is Yours," however, at just under five minutes, humbly boasts itself to be Sleater-Kinney's finest recorded moment. A culmination of the album itself, track three candy-beckons the listener with its immediate instrumental melody. But three-fourths of the way through, conventional intentions are all acid, and Brownstein disintegrates with the song, dressing a Hendrix-savvy solo in backwards delay. The song picks up 45 seconds later, and it's melody alive to finish the journey.

With The Woods, the articulate troubadours of Sleater-Kinney have channeled the best of their influences, the best of their own artistic tendency, and have used these tools fuel a record that might have been grueling to record, but redundant mantra be damned--anyone willing to experience aural laceration that the Woods offers will dig dig dig it.

Requite

Moonlight

<img style="display:block; Their music was not fast, hard, or especially angry. They didn’t have a bassist and all three members switched instruments on stage frequently. But the most alienating factor of the band was Calvin Johnson’s (far right in) contra-bass voice. Although they did not adapt to any of the punk trappings of the day, by rebelling against punks newfound traditionalism, Beat Happening were essentially out-punking the punks. They confronted their audience by not living up to expectations, whatever those were. Calvin, the singer/guitarist/drummer, also started his own record label, “K Records”, further tying him into punk’s DIY culture. I think bands like Beat Happening display a real love for the individual and their capability to make art. For example, Calvin released a cassette tape on K Records of people he met singing improvised songs with no musical accompaniment. How do you guys know each other?

Him and I have had a sort of on and off musical relationship for the past few years. When he moved to Maryland about 2 or so years ago, we officially got to know each other. Before that, he performed at some arts festival and I expressed my interest to start a band. He said yes, then moved here, and yes it became.

So you saw him perform at an arts fest, you guys hit it off and started to collab?

Yeah. Like at first it was him, Danny Wetzstein, Danny's little brother, Marcus, and me. Tymon was living at Danny's house.

--and this is all in MD.

Yes ma'am. I was a terrible drummer and a terrible vocalist but wrote the lyrics and worked on turning them into songs. Then we got Ari Mizani as a drummer, and then I was only a terrible singer. Then Ari was too busy, so we got Bryan Flynn as a drummer.

So your band experience has been very rotational.

Yeah. It sort of shrunk into just me and Tymon and whoever wanted to help out.

You mentioned lyrics--so you're mainly a lyricist?

Yeah. Tymon is definitely a better singer than I am but I am the sort who wants to express his own words. Like, the stories are personal.

Are your songs more abstract, or would you say they're pretty literal?

I would say abstract. Some seem abstract, but are pretty literal.

As a musician, or artist, what would you say you want to offer an audience? Or what do you find in music? What connects you to music?
Atmosphere. Sometimes music is an escape, and sometimes music enhances an emotion. Music can create an experience of its own, or change an experience completely. Music is everywhere. Like, sometimes you are driving in a car and you roll down the windows; music adds to the experience of driving. Or at night when there are crickets adding to the silence; a sort of silent ambiance.

So do you think music influences people subconsciously? They don't even realize why they're feeling a certain way, but it's because of the music?

Sometimes. Sometimes people listen to music and they don't even know what it is about it that they love. There is just "something about it."

Why do you think people do not people realize what they're connecting with in the music?
Well, there is something deeper than just the sound. Maybe the sound or total music connects on a level they can't express, or it hit something inside of them that they didn't know was there.

Cool. Music has many elements that can relate to many people on different levels; relative to different moments, certainly. What is your favorite element of the periodic table?

Haha. That was pretty well put. Umm mine would be whatever I relate with at the moment. There is no way I could narrow it down.

Okay. Between Fe and Sb, which would you rather eat?

Hahaha. Wait. What is Sb?

Antimony. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antimony

This is interesting.

Basically, Would you rather eat carbon steel or paint?

Ooo. Paint. I used to eat paint when I was little.

Really!

Uh huh.

Like, off the wall?

Nopes.

--or from the bucket.

Out of the container.

Did you think it was cream cheese or something? Because one of my siblings used to sit under the table and eat cream cheese.
I loveeeee colors. No. They were just colors.

Awesome. So you were really attracted to the colors?

Oh yeah. Colors and sounds are very closely related for me. Like, have you ever heard a song and visually it connected to a color or design?

Yes. Like, oh. There's this one song by Max Tundra that makes me think of carousels that blink from a natural frame to something overexposed & saturated. So, yes. So then, many times for you, when you hear songs, will they translate visually?

Yeah. Like complex beats and rhythms make design and pitch, and guitar sound makes color.

What's your favorite thing to draw/paint when you hear music?

Ooo. I wish I could draw and paint well. I have horrible motor skills. I just like blending colors and I make shapes when I draw or paint.

Well, horrible is objective, I'm sure.

Hahaha. For sure. But I have no technical ability.

Do you like hats?

Yeah. I am told I have a good hat head.

What's your favorite kind of hat to wear?

I don't own any, though. Umm.

Ah.

I don't know. I don't own many things. I don't connect to material things, really.

Is it easier for you to travel that way? Because I know it's a little hard for me to travel because I'm surrounded by so many clothes, and it's hard to choose what I want to bring with me.

Haha. Well, I have nothing else to compare to, so I don't know.

Lacking in material belongings must be freeing, though.

I guess. I hate packing. I mean, I still need clothes to wear--enough to last the trip. I just don't have much variation. I don't care about what I wear, really.

Do you like clothes with a lot of colors?

I own a bunch of khakis, some cords, and a few of the same shirts. I tend to wear more faded colors. I have friends that wear alot of bolder colors, which is nice.

Do you like Tymon's wardrobe?

Hahahahahahahahaha. It reflects his personality so much.

Yes, Tymon is a very decorated fellow. If you could give Tymon a Mitchell Ildo Henkin-curated makeover, where would you start?

His vests.

Ah, a little Renaissance-y.

Bordering on Aladdin.

Touche. Okay. So. Speaking of Tymon, let's talk about your music. You guys are collaborating on this project--what was the name again?
The Collective Consciousness of Stargazers

And how did you guys come up with that name? Any inside jokes? Or you just liked the ring of it?

Nope, no inside jokes. We were just throwing names around forever and we both connected to it.

Kind of like Stargazing for names.
Nice. Yes. And we realized any group of people share a consciousness.

And who plays what?
I do most of the writing for this project and Tymon and I both sing. He plays guitars. I add beats when we don't have someone better. The band is all sort of being formed as ideas.

Do you have a synth?
We had a keyboard where you could change the sounds to sound more experimental.

Okay--maybe you can answer this question: I came across this claim online when I was researching good electronic devices to purchase; keys & synths, etc. Someone remarked that "no self-respecting keyboard has built-in speakers." Is that true?
I don't hold an opinion about those things. Like, I don't care. Maybe I have no self-respect.

I'm sure you have self-respect. Being in a band is totally self-respecting. You have to get up on stage and it's an assertive job.
Indeed. I was kidding, but, word. I try not get caught up in all of that, 'a real musician does this and a good one does that.' Good music, bad music; just create for the sake of creating. I don't care what you do or do not do.

So you wouldn't put a value judgement on a lot of music? Would you say the perspective is relative (to situation)? (--since music creates mood & atmosphere, as we spoke about earlier.)
I mean, some music doesn't capture me and I do tend to pass judgment sometimes, although I try not to. Judgement is something I feel I need to work on.

Do you like Polaroid cameras or digital cameras?

I like both very much. Polaroids are nice. The Polaroid creates an atmosphere of its own, but digital can be manipulated, which is fun.

True. Do you ever manipulate pictures on Photoshop? I used to when I had a PC and I miss doing that.

I don't know how but I have seen friends do it. Photoshopping is fun to watch and fun to be a backseat driver to. Like, tell them what to do.

Have you ever seen Driving Miss Daisy?

Hahaha. Yeah.

Really? How was it? I've never seen it, actually, but I remember the elder woman from ads on old VHS's and I think VH1 covered it in one of those shows they used to do when I used to have a TV and watch VH1.

I liked it. It is also a good book. 'read it for grade school.

Books! Did you prefer the book or the movie?

The book and movie are very similar. I like Morgan Freeman, and I don't remember the book very well. So, from memory, I would have to say the movie.

Morgan Freeman always seemed like he'd be a good relative to have. I wouldn't mind if he were my uncle or grandfather.

That would create all sorts of confusion. Racially, uncle would make more sense.

Sometimes, things don't always make sense in all sorts of disconnected ways. Random circumstance.

Yeah. Those things make life interesting. Sometimes I wish things would happen. Like, huge things that wouldn't amount towards anything. They just happen. People always need a reason

and that takes something beautiful out of some things.

Are you into existentialism? Or exoskeletons? Do you like turtles?
I am into everything except turtles. Unless they are ninjas or if they have islands on their backs.

Right? Because why do turtles have a shell? Or should we even ask that and just let the turtle be?

I have always wondered what a naked turtle looked like. I never Google imaged it because I want to see it in real life.

That imagine definitely sounds unsettling to me. I would think a naked turtle might be slimy.

They would be wrinkly, I think, like a little old green grandpa.

Sent at 3:23 PM on Wednesday.

[. . . where Mitch put on the reporter hat for a brief. . ]

So. Do you think art should be created for a point? A cause or a purpose to it?

Well I think there is so much art out there in all forms, and if you release something into this already huge glob of art, people are going to take it. and get what they want from it.

Yeah.

--and that's cool, that's great for inspiration but, I also think if you have a clear goal or a clear motive or foundation behind your art, that creation is more solid and can stand on its own and maybe last.

Word.

Yeah.

Yeah.

So there's definitely two sides. Sometimes you need that globby release and sometimes a release is what you want. Art is also a great proactive tool for asking questions and getting answers--if you want answers.

Indeed.

Alright, speaking of solid foundations and original creations, was it tough deciding on a cover for the upcoming event?

Yes, for the most part. The songs are not my number one picks. I needed to keep the people I am performing with happy. But the songs will be fun. They just are not the music I am used to doing.

What is the music you are used to doing? Who are your favorite artists?

My favorite?

Like, who would you listen to when you roll down the windows in the car going 85 toward Tampa? Backroads, no cops. You can go as fast as you want in a red car in your favorite hat and sunglasses.

I suppose as of right now, I love Pink Floyd, Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, and Radiohead.

Would you rather be driving to Tampa or would you rather take a train?

I would rather go North. Haha. I am not a big fan of the sun. It burns me.

Oh, word. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I would love to go anywhere with large prairies and huge blue skies and large fluffy clouds and a tree with lots of shade.

That sounds like Arizona.

Ooo. and lightning storms. Lightning storms are so marvelous.

Lightning freaks me out, so I wouldn't be able to join you and Tymon when you tour there.

Why should we even go then?

So you can take like a lot of pictures for me and I can put them on my Facebook.

Deal.

Okay. One last question: If i'm supposed to stamp people at covers, should I only stamp the 18-20 yr olds, or should I stamp everyone and just use different colors?

Ooo. Use glow in the dark neon colors and when the lights go out and music starts, there will be glowing colors everywhere waving around and leaving streaks in the air.

I like it. Done.

YAY. Alright.

Okay, thanks for the interview!

Thank you. It was fun.

 Awesome. See you saturday!

Bye bye.

AnonyMitch is offline.

Weekend schedule.

Thursday 7/24
CRUNCH.

Friday 7/25
House party in College Park featuring NY & local bands.
My house. Okay so--what moniker am I interviewing you for? You've got several projects happening right now. I'm interviewing you for Covers, though, so, who is your band/who do you plan on playing with?

Galeksie is my new project. I'm the main attraction. I may be recruiting people soon but as of now, it's just me and my creativity; beats, keyboards, a little acoustic.

Sounds like a one woman show. You're like, ready to take over the world.
Self made self paid, baby.

Do you plan on wearing something really weird [at Covers]?

Maybe tin foil headbands and something outer space-like. Maybe just a lot of hot pink or dresses made of plastic cups.

That sounds fancy. A little bit like Lady Kier from Deelite.

She is actually my great grandmother.

Really? That's like way cool. You must be like 10 or something?
1,985

Intergalatic.

Planetarium.

So what does your band sound like?

Teletubbies on crack. TINKY WINKY! Like if Amy Winehouse had a baby with a Teletubby and her grandmother was Deelite. That's me.

Do you think there's an audience for that type of music? Who do you think will listen to that?

Oh everyone who has an ear for these things. Something new; fresh.

Do you think that's really fresh? I mean, aren't Teletubbies from like 1999?

Well, it's a whole new breed of Teletubby, technically speaking. It's like something engrained in your subconscious. From ages 1-10, everything goes there and then you take it and make it "now."

So what genre would you classify this type of music?

I would say it is the little groove in between trip hop and experimental.

Awesome.
So. Today is Friday. What do you usually do on your weekends?

I usually wake up around 5pm so today is unusual. I don't know what to do with myself. Then we usually go out to the local bar or go to MD or to the city [NY] VIP style.

Yesterday, I said that I didn't know what to do with myself outloud in the middle of College Park, and some pedestrian told me I should go see a movie. So I responded, "Batman?" And he was like, "OH YEAH! Let's go!" Do you think you'll go see Batman?

Well you know, Heath Ledger died so I gotta go see it. And we have to figure out as a society the mystery of his death through his role as the Joker.

It was a mystery, wasn't it? I'm sure the movie holds clues. There's always clues.

Do you always shout at pedestrians?

No, he shouted at me first. I said to my friend, after showing her all around that minute College Park shopping center with its 3 bars for 40,000 people, "I don't know what else there is to do around here. . ." and a jolly-go-lucky guy heard me and suggested I see a movie.
But, I don't always shout at pedestrians, no.

He probably thought you guys were cute.

Probably.

That happens to me a lot because--

I am cute.

Pedestrian interaction is a hard thing to avoid when you're aesthetically appealling.
Do you prefer to be cute? Like, is this a solid image for you? Or do you think at some point you'll have a crisis in your career and make the "sexy" transition?

Oh, it's so solid. Unless I get liposuction on my cheeks I'll be forever cute.

Sex appeal is all in the cheeks, I hear.

Yes. Both sets.

Like, when you get your wisdom teeth out, the afterward is not so sex.

--not unless you have a fetish for chipmunks. Like, you get horny every time you see a chipmunk jam nuts into his mouth.

End interview. End of my career.
Haha.

Speaking of nuts--

Omg....My friend Mike is gonna call me today to do music. Maybe I will have a band by Covers.

Yeah?

Yep.

Who would be in your band, ideally?

Well, ideally I would like to get together with you and Misun and Lil Gweezy [Gwen Morrow] and do a girl thing because we are all pretty awesome and like, get Krackie [Jackie O] to DJ. And then in NJ there is Kooks and HyeChun who want to do a Rage/Sublime type band

with me singing. Then there is this power punk project my friend Mike has going on. He has all the music and no lyrics/singer yet.

So you would fill that role.

Yes mam.

Speaking of roles--who are your influences? Musically, artistically, stylistically.

Mrs. Gottleib, my first singing teach. Props! She got me started. But my musicians--I really like Avril, of course; her voice. And Flyleaf and Beth Ditto in the Gossip. And I'm I love John Frusciante and the Chili Peppers.

So it seems you really look to female vocalists for inspiration?
Definitely. There is something about a female voice that can be so powerful.

What have you been listening to lately? Do you listen to more full cds? or songs?

I have make mixes from my party shuffle.

On iTunes?

I tizzles

Where do you get your music?

I used to have Limewire but then the sneaky governMENTALS probly took it away. I like to listen to Pandora radio, also.

What stations?

Lil Wayne and The Knife Radio. My fav song at the moment is "Collie Budz Finally the Herbs Come Around." That song is pretty awesome.

I haven't heard it. A lot of my friends like Lil Wayne but I haven't really done my research there, yet. Is he worth getting into?
It's weird because like a lot of girls that never listen to hip hop love him and want to have his babies. He has tons of music out there but I usually only listen to him to get hyped up for my boring job.

Where do you work?

Club Fit, an upper class gym.

So are you excited about this Covers Coffeehouse?
It's pretty much the talk of the town.

You're pretty much a vet, right? You've been to all of them?

I performed at them all.

Do you have any expectations or fears?

I expect to hear a lot of good music and I fear that fights will break out between men and women because I saw that video of people wrestling. But that will be kind of silly cuz its all in good fun.

If there is wrestling, do you think you'll participate?

No. My ass will get groped.

That might be true, especially since you're cute. Okay, well, from egg sandwiches to inappropriate touching, I think we've covered all the bases here. Is there anything else you'd like to say?
I would like to say that John McCain rapes Gorillas.

What is your Myspace and how can fans contact you?

Sex Pot and ExSandy. Hit me up on the Myspace.

Can we have your phone number?

My phone number is 911. that span America--we'll leave the UK tucked under for now because if I were to agree on any more immediate aero-trips my already gross credit sum would grow no-less spectacular.

So, limiting the hotspot count to nationwide; I am also fortunate enough to know about three warm bodies that have relocated to somewhere in or around these art-centric communities such as

both coasts of Cali.
Seattle.
an old DC friend now lives in Chi-town.
Boston, Massachusetts I like the name Seth and want to give it to my son whenever he decides to show himself. The swan part is just kind of silly.

Who are your members? / roles?
I (Tymon) write most of the songs, do lead vocals and handle half the guitar duties. Scott Nicholas of Her Land/My Land and Leon Farrant both play guitar, Eamon Pickard plays the bass and throws musical theory everywhere, and Will Buerger is the drummer and he's really good at it. Abby Sayre and Ali Longo handle vocal/guitar duties as well.

Where is your band from?
Westchester County, New York.

How long have you been playing together / How did the members meet/decide to collab?
I moved to New York and found Scott somehow, and we started collabing. Eventually Ali and Will joined us, we recruited Eamon, and recently Abby and Leon said they wanted to hang out and then they joined the band.

Is this your first band?
Nope. Sixth.

Describe your music.
Um... kinda like a bluegrass/americana band that decided to hang out with Thurston Moore.

More important: Lyrics or Bass lines?
Um bass lines, but only if you're trying to dance.

Influences?
Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins and the people they hang out with. Kings of Convenience. Wilco and My Morning Jacket.

Do you think it matters that people "get" your music? --Is having an apparent or immediately understood "agenda" important to you?
It is, but not really. As long as people are having fun with us when we play, and as long as we're making music that makes us and our friends happy, we're good. We do want to make music that's never been made before, but not at the cost of doing what we love, or being gimmicky.

Does your band _have_ an agenda?
To become pokemon masters

What separates you from other bands?
I think the only things that separate us from other bands are the facts that we're involved in such an active and supportive scene. Westchester really is the best place to be in a band.

Do you consider yourselves serious musicians?
Yes, but we don't take ourselves seriously. If we did we'd probably all have heart attacks.

What if your recorded music only ends up being important to or purchased by a minor audience? (small audience. . . however what if your music only ends up being important to a young audience?)
I'd honestly feel weird having only little kids listen to our music. But if we became the favorite band of like, a small but devout group of people, we'd be so appreciative. We're not looking for crazy success, like, stadium success. That tends to get weird, from what I've heard.

Does your band have a motto?
Pff no. With our powers combined we are Captain Planet

On past records, particularly your debut, your sound was unique as well as positively comparable to your influences. On this recent recording, the band seems to have, prior to the album, left its members stranded aimless in a desert where flesh and concept, unable to reach immediate sustenance, were slowly stripped, starved, and parched thorough and tandem. Martyrs, musicians, and freshly desperate, this red state ultimately polished that sometimes dull instinct to survive and subsequently revealed the root of the usually sugared-over human desire for higher mind LIKE THAT SPICE TASTE VIA THE CRACK OF WHOLE PEPPERCORN that probably led to the smashingly raw and unmarked beat of your current record. Do you think this new direction will retire some of the comparisons of your band to particular aforementioned bands?
Yes.

Is straight edge going to make a comeback?
Probably not. People like soft things.

Do you like to hang out? where?
The river. New York City. With Thurston Moore. But I've never met him so oh well.

Can we hang out sometime?
We already do that but yeah sure. bring a picnic basket.

What are you listening to lately? Fav releases for the '08 so far..
Bon Iver's "For Emma, Forever Ago," Aaron Maine and the Reilly Brothers' "The Sad Album," Buffalo Eskimo's "The Elephant in the Room," Her Land/My Land's self-titled, Ratatat's "LP3." And I just found an old Pere Ubu CD that I never heard before called "Dub Housing" and it's pretty damn sweet.

Would you play a show for only five people?
We just did last weekend, in Boston. It was sweet.

Would your band alter its set/theatrics if every one's parents were in the audience?
No. The thing is, all of our parents were a thousand times more insane when they were young then we are. They can take it.

Who would buy your records? Who do you want to buy your records?
Cute girls, strong guys, heads of state and homeless war vets.

What did you listen to in high school?
Reel Big Fish, Elliott Smith, Blink 182, Five Iron Frenzy, Smashing Pumpkins, and a lot of bullshit.

Did you have a specific crowd you hung out with?
In high school? Skaters. I spent so much goddamn money on skate stuff.

Did you ever have a Limp Bizkit phase?
No, thank god. The last few years have been amazing, honestly. Just don't turn on the radio and you'll be fine.

Do you think vinyl is a totally necessary experience? or are audiophiles looking at this music vs. sound business all backwards.
Vinyl is pretty crucial. The modern age of convenience in music makes people lazy. Vinyl is just deliberately sexy.

If you had fans, what would they be called (i.e. Grateful dead = Deadheads, Insane Clown Posse's fans are "Juggalos")
I have no goddamn clue. They'd be called bagels.

Any band drama?
Yes. Mostly with old bands. Always stupid and unnecessary. Blah.

Pop goodness or Rock goddess?
Can't we compromise this? Rock goodness?

Can we talk about Lee "Scratch" Perry and Prince Jammy for the summer?
If you really want to.

Any awesome band stories? practice sessions, moments, revelations?
At the last Covers, we did TV on the Radio's "wolf like me". Our drummer was drunk off of his ass and when we were supposed to end the song, he got confused and started drumming more hardcore than he ever has in his life. Nobody missed a beat and we started going right back into the chorus, the lights started going on and off and everyone was going completely nuts. i turned around and looked at him and he was screaming and laughing and we all kind of picked it up to the next level. We dragged it on for another five or ten minutes. It was beautiful.

Any really awful experiences?
We played a show in 2005 at a festival, and everything that could go wrong, went wrong. The cable in my guitar started frying in the beginning of our first song, the microphones decided to completely die right in the middle, and when it came time for our lead guitarist to solo, his top three strings snapped simultaneously. Our bassist got completely confused and stopped playing. After walking around in a complete clusterfuck for about ten seconds, we all just dropped our instruments and walked off stage. Couldn't really sleep that night.

Would you ever destroy your instruments during a performance or are you more of a pause/cautious, 'but this drumkit guitar neck was time + paycheck"? If you are on one side of the destruction, what do you say about the opposite side?
I can't say that I would. We've all given our instruments unfair abuse onstage but actually breaking them is just fucking stupid. I saw Win Butler break an acoustic guitar onstage, and it just looked ridiculous. I wanted to fucking smack him.

Myspace?
http://www.myspace.com/tymonbrown. We'll have new recordings up soon.

What are your views on red meat?
It's pretty damn good. Until you go into cardiac arrest.

Who is the least attractive member of your band?
That would be Leon.

Did I just start a fight?
Only if Leon reads this.

Who will win?
I'm a lot bigger than Leon.

Facechat or Gchat?
Never used Gchat, but facechat blows. So I have no opinion on this silly silly matter.

Do you think you'll add new band members? What would be his/her role?
We'll probably add a keyboardist/
multinstrumentalist soon. I might move to DC also so you never know, could be completely new people. We'll just have to see.

What's your favorite thing on youtube?
Oh snap. It's a toss-up between Waverly Films and that video of that stupid cat trying to jump over a fence.

Where do you shop? What is the one clothing item you cannot live without?
I shop in the city and get most of my shirts from other band's merch tables. I think I couldn't live without my shoes. I kind of need them.

Sonic Youth or My Bloody Valentine?
Ugghhhhhhh. Sonic Youth.

The Feelies or Weezer?
Compared to weezer, fuck the feelies.

Do you still like Radiohead?
I love them. They're on par with the beatles and mozart in my mind.

Sofia Coppola?
Is a genius and I love her.

It's 3am on a Tuesday. Where are you?
Playing music with aaron and kolson, or asleep.

Borges or Valery?
lettuce

Mac or PC?
pc'

Aren't the Talking Heads boring?
you are incorrect.
David Byrne. Watch the psychokiller vid on old grey whistle test. you will agree with me.

Who would you ask to remix your songs?
Broken Social Scene or Gregg Gills.

If you could have any band or celebrity cover your material, who would it be?
Broken Social Scene, Gregg Gills, Kings of Convenience, the Go! Team, or Wilco.

Who are you trying to beat?
Aaron Maine, Shori Matsumoto, and Kolson Pickard. I love them so much that i hate them.

Who will win?
I'm bigger than them.

Do you have a favorite cover?
Kazu Watanabe's Talking Heads compilation. And soooo cheap.
A good modification to any guitar is to add locking tuners. You will never go out of tune, until the strings break.

Would you ever play an album in its entirety @ a live show? What do you think of this concept?
I think it's fucking amazing. Mission of Burma is doing that at the pitchfork music fest this year with their album Vs. It's amazing. I wish more bands did that.

Did you ever go to band camp?
I wish.

What did you do on the fourth of July?
Last year I was in Palestine on the fourth. That was a little weird. This year I was with my family.

How can readers contact you?
they can contact me through our myspace, or email me at tymbo@worldcommunity.com.

Any last words?
Turn off the radio and go see a show please and thank you.

[Look out for Seth and the Swan's upcoming record, Sunshine and Carrots.]

Hype - This event has little to do with business and everything to do with making creative connections and the above mentioned objective.

The donation will hopefully cover unforeseen problems we've been unable to cater to in the past. For instance, a resident donated their house to be used the last Covers, and house not being accustomed to the this many people that came & went, bathroom / sewage problems like m a j o r happened. In the end, the sewage problem didn't really get worked out so well and I felt totally bad.

I am not making any money from this event, and any extra funds (be there any) will be donated to suitable charity, HW5 published on this blog.

O.K.
Those stats defined,

July 26th.
Do not miss.

Any other questions, comment on this entry or send them to
aud520@gmail.com

ALSO:
If you'd like to perform, we still may have some space. so. RSVP to aud520@gmail.com by July 12th.

--audrey

Sweet.

The Facebook medium:
Less than we need.

This is our new blog, a proper medium for all this stuff going on and this Coffeehouse event which is being held on July 26th at La Casa in Mt. Pleasant.

Right now I'm sitting at Mayorga Coffeehouse in DC with Tymon and a few other people, and we're just tossing ideas around about this upcoming gig and how to keep things in order.

To kick off this blog, let's mmm...let's feature some music relative to the event. If you've come here and have no idea what "Covers Coffeehouse" is, stay tuned. I will totally cover everything in the next entry. For now, this is just a test run.

Tymon suggested / led the way to the video below by Pleasantville, NY musicians Sweet Nothing Music Collective (SNMC), now disbanded, which features members of several bands scheduled to perform at the coffeehouse on July 26th.

According to Tymon, this former New York qunitet (plus or minus 1 or 2 musicians) features lead vocals from Aaron Maine on a song orignially penned by bass player & lead vocalist Chen Longo. The original lineup of the band consisted of members Kolson Pickard, Kevin Farrant, Chen Longo, and Aaron Maine. Ryan Hickey and Orien Longo later joined the Collective.

Tymon, good friend and collaborator, and also a member of the band Kapteyn, says:

"Aaron and Kolson usually switched off between keyboard, drums, and guitar. Everyone would switch around a lot. Chen was usually on bass, though, and Ryan was usually on drums. Orien drummed for them for awhile, and then Kolson took over that spot, and eventually Ryan took over for good. Sweet Nothing Music Collective went through a lot of transformations."

Eventually, circumstance caused the band to stop playing together.

"Kolson started going to school in Potsdam (NY) for awhile. That was one of the reasons. The Longos moved to Cold Spring, Kevin started working in art and going to school a lot. Ryan went to Ithica, which is about seven hours away from the band's hometown of Pleasantville,
and Chen joined Gandalf Murphy. Aaron started making his own music and making his own name.

"From the ashes of SNMC came Buffalo Eskimo, Aaron Maine and the Reilly Brothers, Chin Lingo, and The Din of Mechanical Whales."

Sweet Nothing Music Collective, "See You"

Check out their Myspace, as well.
Sweet Nothing Music Collective:
http://www.myspace.com/thesnmc

--audrey
